Have you ever had one of those days where everything that could go wrong does?
Speaker A:Your alarm doesn't go off, you spill coffee on your shirt, your car won't start, and that's all before 9am well, buckle up because today we're diving into those unpredictable, messy, frustrating moments when life decides to throw us not just a curveball, but a whole bucket of them.
Speaker A:Let your spirit fly.
Speaker A:Celebrate the journey every single day.
Speaker A:Aging with grace and style in our own special way.
Speaker A:Welcome to Aging with Grace and Style, the show that proves getting older doesn't mean slowing down.
Speaker A:I'm your host, Valerie.
Speaker A:And if you're new here, first of all, welcome.
Speaker A:If you've been rocking with me for a while, then of course, welcome back.
Speaker A:This is where we get real about midlife and beyond.
Speaker A:With grace, confidence, and sometimes a little humor.
Speaker A:We talk about the stuff that no one prepares us for, but we figure it out together.
Speaker A:And today we're talking about something that we've all experienced.
Speaker A:Those moments when life just be lifein.
Speaker A:Now listen, this episode was supposed to go out on Tuesday morning, just like always.
Speaker A:I usually record about a week or two in advance and I pride myself on keeping that rhythm.
Speaker A:But phew, life has been lifein'and.
Speaker A:For a minute, I thought about just skipping a week, giving myself a pass.
Speaker A:But I couldn't do it.
Speaker A:I reminded myself of what I often say, show up, even if it's imperfect.
Speaker A:So here I am, a little behind, a little tired, but still here.
Speaker A:Better late than never, right?
Speaker A:So you know those perfectly laid plans that we all make?
Speaker A:The vision boards, the calendars, the color coded to do list?
Speaker A:Oh, is it just me who does all of that and more?
Speaker A:Yeah, life takes one look at all that and says, that's cute.
Speaker A:But here's what we're really going to do.
Speaker A:So let's talk about how to roll with the punches and maybe even come out swinging.
Speaker A:Let's start with this truth bomb.
Speaker A:Life is unpredictable.
Speaker A:You can plan, prepare and plot.
Speaker A:But sometimes life says, hold my coffee.
Speaker A:It's like trying to nail jello to a wall.
Speaker A:Messy, frustrating, and ultimately futile.
Speaker A:But here's the twist.
Speaker A:That unpredictability.
Speaker A:It's also what makes life exciting.
Speaker A:It's what keeps us growing.
Speaker A:Because in those moments of chaos, we find resilience that we didn't know we had.
Speaker A:Let's call out a few of those curveballs.
Speaker A:There's the health scare that comes out of nowhere.
Speaker A:The job shift that you didn't see coming.
Speaker A:The family drama that you never asked for.
Speaker A:Or how about when your car suddenly needs a new transmission, or you're juggling aging parents and grown kids who still need you and relationships.
Speaker A:Just when you think you figured someone out.
Speaker A:Plot twist.
Speaker A:The truth is, life's challenges don't check your age or your calendar.
Speaker A:They just show up.
Speaker A:You don't grow out of them.
Speaker A:These surprises don't just mess up your day.
Speaker A:They can derail entire life plans.
Speaker A:That dream vacation, postponed.
Speaker A:That promotion that you've been working your butt off for, delayed because of budget cuts, or they're going in a different direction.
Speaker A:That project that you were finally ready to launch, suddenly not the priority.
Speaker A:I've been in a position where I have worked on a project for months to be told we are pivoting to something else.
Speaker A:And in those moments, it is so easy to want to throw in the towel.
Speaker A:But here's where it gets personal.
Speaker A:Just a couple of weeks ago, my mom was scheduled for eye surgery.
Speaker A:I packed.
Speaker A:And when I say I packed, trust me, I packed.
Speaker A:I had some content to create, so I had that with me.
Speaker A:I had ordered some small lights on Amazon to be delivered there to make sure the lighting would be right when I was creating the content.
Speaker A:You name it, I was ready.
Speaker A:Sometimes I do over prepare.
Speaker A:Anyway, I drove four hours and planned to stay the week to take care of her or to get on her nerves, depending on which of us is telling this story.
Speaker A:Everything was in place.
Speaker A:But right as they were preparing her for the procedure, they stopped.
Speaker A:Her blood pressure was too high to continue.
Speaker A:No surgery.
Speaker A:Just like that, the whole plan flipped.
Speaker A:I had to pivot, take her to her primary care doctor, and come back home.
Speaker A:Talk about a curveball.
Speaker A:But here's the thing.
Speaker A:I truly believe everything happens for a reason.
Speaker A:So I chose to roll with it.
Speaker A:Because that's what life sometimes requires.
Speaker A:Grace in the moment and the flexibility to say, okay, let's adjust the secret sauce.
Speaker A:Flexibility.
Speaker A:Think of yourself like a willow tree.
Speaker A:Bend, but don't break.
Speaker A:Resilience is like emotional strength training.
Speaker A:You don't get it without the reps.
Speaker A:Let's talk about the power of plan B and C and D.
Speaker A:Having backup plans isn't a sign of weakness.
Speaker A:It's really wisdom.
Speaker A:It's saying, I'm not putting all my peace in one outcome.
Speaker A:And sometimes that flexibility shows up as asking for help shifting timelines or even giving yourself permission to rest, which I honestly need to do.
Speaker A:Be better at.
Speaker A:Here's where the real magic happens.
Speaker A:Every setback is a setup for a comeback.
Speaker A:Lost your job?
Speaker A:Maybe that's the push to finally start your business.
Speaker A:Or the push to leave a job that you had outgrown but stayed because you were comfortable.
Speaker A:Relationship ended.
Speaker A:Now you've got space for healing and maybe rediscovery.
Speaker A:Think about the time something didn't go according to plan and yet it led you to something better.
Speaker A:You didn't see it at first, but in hindsight, that detour was divine.
Speaker A:So how do we embrace those chaotic moments without losing our minds?
Speaker A:Start with humor.
Speaker A:Seriously, laugh at it.
Speaker A:I do that often because when I don't laugh, I'm probably somewhere stressing.
Speaker A:One day you'll laugh about showing up to a meeting with your skirt inside out or crying in the chick fil a drive thru.
Speaker A:Trust me, I mean, neither has happened to me.
Speaker A:But I'm just saying it could be this or a similar situation.
Speaker A:And when it does happen, share your stories.
Speaker A:You'd be surprised how many people will say girl, me too.
Speaker A:And finally, remember this.
Speaker A:It's often the detours, not the destination, that shape our story the most.
Speaker A:So here's what I want you to take with you today.
Speaker A:Life.
Speaker A:Well, it's going to life.
Speaker A:But you.
Speaker A:You don't have to break every time it does.
Speaker A:You don't always have to turn lemons into lemonade.
Speaker A:Sometimes it's okay just to sit with it, pucker up and feel it.
Speaker A:Because even in the sour moments, there's growth.
Speaker A:We talked about the unpredictable predictability of life, the curveballs that it throws, how they impact our plans, and most importantly, how to stay flexible.
Speaker A:Find the opportunity and embrace the chaos.
Speaker A:You're stronger than the storm.
Speaker A:You're wiser than you were a year ago.
Speaker A:And no matter what life throws your way, you've got what it takes to bounce back, to regroup, and to keep going.
Speaker A:So here's your challenge this week and if you follow me and listen every week, you know there's always a challenge when life be lifein.
Speaker A:Pause, breathe and ask yourself, what's the opportunity here?
Speaker A:And if you find a little humor in the chaos, share it with someone.
Speaker A:You just might make their day.
Speaker A:Until next time.
Speaker A:My job is to just remind you to keep aging with grace, style and a healthy dose of just roll with it attitude.
Speaker A:I'll see you next week.
Speaker A:And hey, don't forget to smile even when life is doing the most.
